Boy Scout Troop 242 Malvern, Iowa

Welcome

Building Tomorrow's Leaders...

Troop 242
Our Scout Troop consists of 19 boys. Our Scoutmaster is John Phelps. We meet every Sunday at 7:00 p.m. upstairs at the Malvern Community Building. At our meeting we learn many skills such as knot tying, tent pitching, First Aid, survival skills, fire starting, and navigation. Every month we also go camping at local parks and private wooded areas and ponds. Every summer we go to summer camp at Camp Cedars, and work on merit badges. Every two years we go on a high adventure trip in the summer to either the Boundary Waters Canoe Area or Cloud Peak Wilderness area in Wyoming. If you are interested in joining our troop please contact John Phelps at 712-624-8380.

Troop 242 to Attend Camp Cedars this Summer - ASK US HOW YOU CAN COME ALONG!
This summer Troop 242 is attending summer camp at Camp Cedars.  Camp Cedars is a very exciting place to go camping.  We attend here every summer.  It is a great place to get most of your merit badges done, but most of all it is fun!  They have a pool, lake, shooting ranges and much, much more.  Camp Cedars is a great place for the scouts and it's very educational.

Nishnabotna Canoe Trip September 15-16, 2007
We left at 10:00 a.m. Saturday morning, and we unloaded the canoes north of Highbanks farm. We then paddled four to five miles south. Then we ate lunch on a sandbar. Then we continued our journey and missed our original campsite, so we stopped at a bridge, meanwhile our scoutmaster capsized (tipped over) his canoe. It was filled with water. Then he dumped the water out of the canoe and caught up with us then, we set camp on a nearby sandbar and started a fire to warm up the Scoutmaster so he didn't get hypothermia. Then we made camp. We woke up and continued our journey to the Randolph road bridge.
Then loaded up the canoes and went home.

Eagle Scout Projects

Eagle Scout Project at Boehner Pond
On August 19, 2007 Troop 242 helped Joe Morgan with his Eagle Scout project by putting in a outdoor information bulletin board at Boehner Pond in Malvern. There were approximately fifteen scouts there that day. We dug two four foot deep holes then lowered the kiosk into the holes. Then we filled the holes with concrete. The bulletin board is used to provide information about the city of Malvern for park users.

Eagle Scout Project at Rescue Center
On May 17, 2009, Troop 242 assisted Matt Miller with his Eagle Scout project.  The project was to paint the training room inside the Rescue Center.  There were about nine scouts there.  The painting only took three and a half hours.  Now the volunteer rescuers have a great room to train in and have meetings.
